Mathias Schech

My painting is the story of a ballad. I am a walker who is trying to lose himself. A painting is more than just images and more than the spreading of colour on a canvas. I take as a basis the souvenir photographs of my ballads. I scribble, I daub paint. Then I find the rhythm. There, I managed to lose myself. When the result suits me, I’m done. I’m happy.
I have chosen to present these paintings because I think they fairly faithfully represent my impression of Berlin. Its immensity and coldness as opposed to the warmth and the proximity of those who live there. An impression that I think is shared by many of those who live or lived here.
